My Grandma shared this recipe with me and it’s been a favorite of mine every year at Thanksgiving. It’s by far better than any other yam side dish I’ve had. (I don’t like yams and marshmallows.)
Step: 1
Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step: 2
Place the sweet potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat; reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until just tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Drain and allow to steam dry for a minute or two. Peel and cut into 1/2-inch slices; layer the sweet potatoes and apples into a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Step: 3
Meanwhile, stir together the sugar, cornstarch, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a saucepan. Stir in the water and butter and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook and stir until thickened and no longer cloudy, 5 to 10 minutes. Pour over the sweet potatoes.
Step: 4
Bake in the preheated oven until the apples are very tender and the sweet potatoes are golden on top, about 1 hour.

The most obvious way to choose a side dish is to look at your main dish (pasta, chicken, seared tofu) and choose more different. When you’re cooking pasta, go for a simple healthy dish . Made steak? Go for something light. If you’re want to cooking stir-fry with rice, it must not a good idea to also make a rice salad.
This also can apply to cooking method . You don’t want to push more often your oven by making to do list three dishes at once in there, or be rounding four pans on the stovetop . But sometimes you can made a dish do more often .
